China Substantial Amount U.S. Dollars Treasury Bills “China has developed into a major factory state and export power house capable of producing anything and everything, efficiently…” Within relevant circles, China has been considered an economic superpower. Economists and the like have marvelled at how technology and economic growth cascaded up within a relatively short span of time. China makes optimum use of its best resource - people, collaboratively producing much of the world’s supplies; from stationery, food, medicines, gadgets, cars to just about every consumer product, thus putting China firmly on the map as a trade partner to the world. The ‘Made in China’ label however has always accompanied mixed reviews. While the products are cost effective, there have always been concerns over labour law practices. There have been rumours about human right’s abuses including child labour, issues raised regarding immigrant miners, questionable sweatshop practices and so forth. All of which eventually winds up being an effort to bounce up profit by multiplying input and attain greater output in number; all the while quality suffers. Unfortunately some of the rumours have accompanied considerable evidence to back the country’s stigma over assembly lines, unspeakable work hours and deplorable pay. Positive GDP numbers and favourable global standings in intercepting most major sectors of the world including education, technology, automobiles and Science have boosted China’s strength. Unfortunately for the country’s image, there have also been a number of ‘issues’ to stigmatise and tarnish their stance, like controversy over labour practices, civil laws and disparity with Tibet. Most recently China has been hit hard, accused of producing faulty, dangerous and potentially lethal consumer goods. It all started with contaminated pet food, containing melamine, which caused liver failure in countless cats and dogs in the US. The matter of quality in Chinese manufacturing was put under the radar as horrified consumers began to question the reliability of the affordable ‘Made in China’ label and how much, stumpy standards could wind up costing. While the media has in part been accused of sensationalizing the ‘Made in China’ stigma, particularly since the those responsible for producing faulty goods were promptly penalized, tainted Chinese products have yet to be completely off of store shelves. Most recently the US added farm-raised fish to a growing list of Chinese products deemed unsafe. Aside from alleged harmful additives in consumer goods, there’s also the issue of sloppy, ill conceived manufacturing. The toy industry for one revoked many products on account of the use of lead paint, making harmless train-sets, hazardous to young children. American toy company RC2 recalled 20 different Chinese made toys for similar reasons. Other product concerns include, stationery sets imported by Tri Star International that were packed in with sharp razor blades to serve as paper cutters. There is also the issue of mislabeling as reportedly a Chicago resident was hospitalized after having what he thought was monkfish soup which turned out to be puffer fish, which contains tetrodotoxin, a toxin that can kill humans by first numbing the body and causing paralysis.
